  • Scope and Content
    The series consists of instructions to staff taking classified advertisements.
    There was originally a typescript instruction that was added to over the years the series was in use by annotation or memoranda. The instructions include where the advertisements are inserted, procedures for taking the advertisements; arrangements under each major heading, stylistic matters. The volumes are indexed at the front according to type of advertisement. These include personal and businesses, real estate, trade and professional services, houses and land for sale, motor vehicles sales, employment advertising, lost items, transport, hospitals, pets. The volumes overlap and there is some similarity but are not identical. They may have been simultaneously used by the staff for most of the period of their existence. Both volumes are marked ‘Return to H. Hood, Classified.
    File 3 consists of a manual intended to supplement the training program for classified employees by providing more information about the role and management of the Department, definitions and regulations that apply to the classified columns. The second section of the manual is an alphabetical compilation of the classification indicating deadlines for the acceptance of advertisements. There is a separate page for each description which describes the classification indicates the rules for each classification e.g. The size, column width, whether crests can be included and any restrictions relating to the category. There are examples of completed advertisements throughout the volume. There is an indication of the arrangement of the advertisements in this section in the printed newspaper. These is an alphabetical list of classifications at the front of this section. An undated card for the calculation of costs is placed at the back of this volume. This volume appears to be dated about 1976. The label on the spine reads 'Classified Advertising Manual'
    File 4 This is a typescript manual. The classifications are arranged alphabetically and there is an index at the front of the volume. In the volume proper there is a page for each classification. This describes the classification, the arrangement within the newspaper, any size restrictions, and deadlines for copy. There is also advice on the use of symbols, crests. There are examples of completed advertisements throughout the volume. A card for the calculation of costs dated April 1978 is placed at the back of this volume. This volume appears to be dated about 1982. There is a label. 'Telephone ad room manual' on the spine and 'N. Williams' on the front of the volume.
