  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Sydney Morning Herald Hospital Fund was established on 20 March 1941. The first general meeting of Fund took place on 3 May 1941 with Harry H. Wheeler, a piece operator, in the chair. The Fund, which members of the SMH Chapel were eligible to join, assisted members with the payment of hospital bills and some related medical services such as x-ray and optometrical services. By 1951 the Executive consisted of the President; two vice presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, four committee members.
On 1 January 1952 the Fund was under Part V of the Hospital Benefits (Private Hospitals) Regulations enabling the members to claim for additional Commonwealth benefits. Under these regulations the Fund was required to pay a fee for registration; to maintain membership records sufficient to enable the preparation of returns under the Act; to maintain accounts, funds and investments for the benefits that require payments from the Commonwealth; to maintain a separate account for administrative expenses; to comply with relevant state legislation; and to ensure that applications for Commonwealth additional hospital benefit were to be made on the official Commonwealth forms.
It is unclear when the hospital fund ceased operating but it is known a prospectus dated 1 February 1984 survives
