The series consists of duplicate copies of memoranda pasted into volumes. The memoranda concern instructions for classified advertisements. These include changes to lists, suggestions for additional headings, suggestions, complaints, specific instructions, advices regarding variations to publishing schedule and special supplements for which relevant advertising might be sought, clients and advertisement types that are not normally to be accepted. The provenance of the memoranda has rarely survived but it is assumed that these memoranda originated in the Advertising Department. The 3rd and 4th volumes in this series are labelled ‘Memos re style, rules, etc’ Books 1 and 2 respectively but these are not contemporary with the series and these items clearly follow the two proceeding volumes. As the series progresses there are an increasing number of insertion such as rules, rate lists and letters from Fairfax senior management company. There are many loose cuttings and correspondence items in the final volume.
The first volume in this series has an index to customers and subjects inside the back cover. The index to the second volume appears to have been lost. The third and fourth volumes carry indexes at the front.
