For each day the volume sets out the number of advertisements carried and the circulation figure for the Sydney Morning Herald. The volume is set out in such a manner that for the comparable day of each year (In five year blocks) the advertisements places and the circulation figures can be compared. E.g. figures are shown for 2 January 1899, 1 January 1900, 31 December 1901, and 30 December 1902 and 29 December 1903 within the same table so that comparison is simplified. When there is a special edition or a major event that would affect the figures this is indicated. E.g. Commonwealth Inauguration, Franco British Exhibition, Her Majesty's Theatre Fire, state or federal election and similar.
Facility is provided for the circulation figures, but not advertisements for The Sydney Mail. The cover of the volume is marked 'Private 1899'. Circulation figures continued to be an important activity but there does not appear to be any direct successor to this volume.
It is unclear who retained these figures but for the short term the series is attributed to the Business and Clerical Department
