The purpose of the series appears to have been to record payments to the staff for their services. Most of the salaries have been entered weekly although some were paid monthly. There are some pasted in calculations for staff that were paid per contribution. The volumes also include a number of loose papers that supported the process such as notifications of salary rates and changes, lists of officers and their salaries and rough workings. The first three volumes in this series were originally locked.
The third volume includes only the monthly salaries and after May 1934 sets out the gross salary, tax, contributions to the Provident Fund and net salary. The administrative unit in which the officer served are omitted after July 1939. This volume contains a range of loose papers related to the personnel function including letters regarding appointments and income tax deductions.
The final two volumes in this series are in larger format. These are chronologically arranged and for each officer include holiday pay, monthly salary, sundries and total. The accounts are totalled monthly. There is a reconciliation of holiday pay and a monthly Bank reconciliation. It is unclear why there is apparent overlap in volumes 4 and 5 and that the information is not identical.
