    In March 1918 The Sun Newspaper Company Limited acquired The Northern Times and, renamed the newspaper as the Newcastle Sun published by a company known as the Newcastle Sun Limited. On 27 March 1920 The Sun Newspapers Limited was formed acquiring the assets and undertakings of The Sun Newspaper Company Limited and The Newcastle Sun Limited.
    In 1922 the Sun Newspaper (Melbourne) was established with a capital of 250,000 the 100,000 preference shares were taken up by the shareholders of the Sydney Company and the Melbourne public. The first publications of the Melbourne Company were The Sun News Pictorial , commencing on 11 September 1922 followed by the Evening Sun on 4 April 1923. On 9 June 1925 an Extraordinary meeting of shareholders resolved that the Sun Newspaper (Melbourne) be wound up voluntarily and that Sir Hugh Denison and Mr Harry Ambrose Russell were appointed liquidators. A further meeting of the shareholders on 31 August 1926 accepted the report of the liquidators.
    The Sun News Pictorial was sold and the Evening Sun was discontinued. The Melbourne business was finalised in 1927 following the sale of the premises.
    On 12 December 1927 The Sun Newspapers Limited acquired a controlling interest in the Daily Telegraph News Pictorial formed to take over the business of the Daily Telegraph Newspaper Co. Ltd.
    In August 1929 the company moved into new Head Office premises in Elizabeth Street, Sydney.
    On 1 October 1929 The Sun Newspapers Limited merged with S. Bennett Ltd to become Associated Newspapers Ltd. The Sun Newspapers Ltd continued to operate as a subsidiary of Associated Newspapers Ltd until 1936 when all of the other subsidiaries were disposed of. The Sun Newspapers and Sungravure were voluntarily liquidated and their assets and specie transferred to Associated Newspapers Ltd on 29 March 1937.
  • Scope and Content
    This is the official confirmed set of minutes for Sun Newspapers Ltd signed by the chairman of the following meeting. Meetings were held approximately weekly. The meetings received financial accounts, authorised payments, approved transfers of shares, signed share certificates, considered correspondence, received reports from senior officers and deliberated upon major matters of concern for the Company such as acquiring land buildings, plant and other major items, amalgamations with other companies. Related papers are inserted into the volume. These include notices of annual and extraordinary general meetings of shareholders, copies of annual reports and balance sheets. The minutes of the annual meeting are included.

    Minute books 1,3,4 and 6 contain loose index books. The subject entries refer to both the page and minute numbers. The index to the minutes for the period 17 April 1931 to 29 March 1936 is a separate series. There are copies of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of Sun Newspapers Limited, 1920 attached to Items 2 and 3
