Donald (Don) Gazzard (1929-2017), architect and author, studied at the University of Sydney before becoming the first apprentice of architect Harry Seidler in 1950. From 1954 he spent four years working in London and two years in Montreal. On his return to Sydney in 1960 he established Clark, Gazzard and Partners, with George Clarke and Peter Yeomans, as a multi-disciplinary design and planning practice specialising in both architecture and urban research and design. In the late 1970s he set up a smaller practice on his own and was later joined by partners Morris Rosenberg and Mark Sheldon, practising as Gazzard Sheldon Rosenberg and, after Rosenberg's departure, as Gazzard Sheldon Architects. Over 40 years, Gazzard worked on many significant projects including pedestrian precincts in Martin Place and Circular Quay and the first City of Sydney Strategic Plan. His landmark 1966 'Australian Outrage' exhibition condemned poor design in the urban environment. In 1970 he was made a Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA). He was awarded RAIA and Wilkinson awards and his Wentworth Memorial Church at Vaucluse is listed on the New South Wales Heritage Register.
