  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Ben Haneman was a medical practitioner with enormous range of interests. He had a valuable personal library containing thousands of volumes, and was a greatly respected member of the Library Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He also had a passion for Spain and its culture and donated to the State Library over 2000 editions of Don Quixote in various languages together with books on Cervantes. He became the first Life Member of the Library Society in 2001. He compiled this album after visiting New Zealand and developing an interest in ‘Maoris on Stamps.’

  • Scope and Content
    A generic Erskine Stamp Spring Back Binder, ca. 1956, containing New Zealand postage stamps, ca. 1906-1940. The stamps were selected and acquired by Ben Haneman based on their depiction of Maoris, or Maori art motifs. Haneman arranged the album into thematic subject groupings: Maori Art, The Maori Monument, The Arrival of the Maoris, The Treaty of Waitangi 1840, The Carved Meeting House, Early Thematic Stamp, Carving Design, Figures, Mania Patterns, Border Patterns, Hand Painted Flying Doctor Stamp, Tattoos, Tikis, Ornamented House, Store House, Weaving Designs, Cape and Skirt, Head Gear, Ornamented Canoes, Ornamented Weapons, Last Look. In addition, Haneman included typescript research notes that provide historical context to each thematic group. A small quantity of stamped envelopes, postcards and currency depicting Maori themes are also included.
