Benedict Read (1945-2016) was an English art historian and leading authority on Victorian sculpture. He knew Travers when younger and did some work for her, helping to catalogue some of her papers.

A collection of manuscript and typescript material written by, and to, P. L. Travers.

The collection includes:

1. Handwritten aerogram to Mrs PL Travers from M. Goff of Mosman (sister), 26 December 1961. Includes reflection on their mother and childhood.
2. Typescript, signed, letter to P. L. Travers from Biddy, 27 December 1961. Possibly sister Barbara. Refers to ‘the Disney project’.
3. Typescript letter to Pamela from Ellic Howe(?) on personalised notepaper of Ellic Howe, 9 March 1970. Annotated, torn with lower right section of page missing.
4. Letter to Pamela from Jacqueline. Typescript and handwritten. 1 page. Undated.
5. Three leaf typescript document, by P. L. Travers outlining her wishes to start ‘The Cherry Tree Foundation’, to help children. The foundation was built upon royalties from the Mary Poppins film. Undated.
6. Seven leaf typescript copy of ‘Delta Readers – Grade Two, Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers, Chapter One – East Wind’. In pen, ‘Notes for this, at request’. The verso of pages 1 to 6, contain an untitled manuscript in ink (including some words in French) in the hand of P. L. Travers.
7. Ten leaf typescript copy of ‘Delta Readers – Grade Two, Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers, Chapter Three – Laughing Gas’. The verso of pages 5 to 10, contain an untitled manuscript in ink in the hand of P. L. Travers.
8. Typescript press release from Parabola Magazine, New York, N. Y.
9. Facsimile copy of ‘Catalogue of P. L. Travers material’ compiled by Benedict Read. A ‘with compliments’ slip from David Higham Associates Limited is attached to the copy.
10. Three typescript photocopies of ‘A catalogue of further papers relating to P. L. Travers’ by Benedict Read, compiled 1980.
11. Typescript ‘Sections J to N‘ an addendum to ‘A catalogue of further papers relative to P. L. Travers’ compiled by Benedict Read, added September 1981 and three photocopies of same.
12. Personalised notecard, handwritten, to Ben [Benedict Read] from Pamela Travers (P. L. Travers) asking Read to complete the catalogue of her papers for her lawyer. Signed, 8 July 1983.
