  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Roland Pope was born in Sydney, and went to school in Hobart; and he later studied medicine at Sydney University, Glasgow and then Edinburgh. In 1893 he set up an ophthalmic practice in Elizabeth Street, Sydney, and was head of ophthalmology at Sydney Hospital for a period of 17 years. Roland also features in the pages of Australian Cricketing History. In 1884-85, he played for New South Wales against Victoria, and was an emergency call-up to play in the dire second Test against England, at Melbourne, Jan 1-5, 1885. Roland was also a generous philanthropist, diverse collector and later in life was involved in the founding of the library and art gallery of the City of Newcastle. He was a major benefactor and donated his collection of books, together with his collection of art, and his collection of sporting memorabilia.

  • Scope and Content
    Three albumen, carte de visite print photographs by John Hurbert Newman. The portraits show two sons and a daughter of John Pope (1827-1912), whose names are inscribed on the photos’ verso sides. This identifies the sitters as Alfred John (1859-1928), Roland James (1864-1952), and Alice Maude Pope.

    1. Alfred John Pope. A young boy about 11 years of age, in long trousers and jacket, standing at a small table.
    2. Roland James Pope. A small boy about 6 years of age, in short trousers and jacket, sitting on an embroidered stool.
    3. Alice Maude Pope. A small girl about about 8 years of age, holding a basket of flowers, sitting on a chair.

  • Signatures / Inscriptions

    The words ‘Newman’ and ‘Sydney’ are printed on the lower edge of each card, and his imprint, ‘J.H. NEWMAN / 12 South Head Road / Close to Hyde Park / SYDNEY’ is stamped on the verso of each card.
