  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Toulgra/Toul-gra, or Bulldog (Bouldogue), a 14 or 15 year old boy, drawn by Nicolas-Martin Petit, artist on Nicolas Baudin’s expedition to Australia. The portrait is one of a series Petit produced of Aboriginal people in New South Wales while the French expedition spent a lengthy layover at Port Jackson between 20 June and 18 November 1802.

This portrait of Toulgra was one of nine plates of portraits of Aboriginal people from New South Wales engraved after drawings by Petit and were published in the second edition (1824) of the official account of the Baudin voyage.

Toulgra is an important historical figure for the Eora people of Sydney. He was born near Parramatta around the time of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, the son of Bennelong’s sister Worogan and Yerinibe of the Burramattagal (Parramatta) according to Keith Vincent Smith's research published in Mari Nawi: Aboriginal Odysseys. Bennelong was living nearby when the French visited Parramatta in 1802 and this sketch was drawn. Toulgra, along with Musquito, Gnung-a Gnung-a, and Bidgee Bidgee, (all drawn by Petit) were related by marriage to Bennelong.
