  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

David Collins arrived with the First Fleet aboard the Sirius in 1788. He was appointed deputy judge advocate and lieutenant-governor of the new colony and as such, Collins was responsible, under the governor, for the colony's entire legal establishment. Collins returned to the colony in 1803 to take up the appointment as the first Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land.

The portrait is by the English miniaturist artist John T. Barber (1774-1841) who born 1774 in London. He joined the Royal Academy school at the age of 17, took to miniature painting and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1794-1806. His patrons included the Royal Family, the Dukes of Kent, York and Clarence, before he changed careers and added Beaumont to his name in 1812.
