  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Joseph Palmer Abbott was born at Muswellbrook, NSW in 1842. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1865 and was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Gunnedah in 1880. He held the seat until 1887 when he was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly for the seat of Wentworth which he held until 1901. He was Secretary for Mines (1883-1885), and for Lands (1885) and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly (1890-1900). In 1891 Abbott was chosen as a New South Wales delegate at the National Australasian [Federation] Convention where he was chairman of committees. From 1892 to 1896 he worked for Federation and was elected a delegate to the 1897-98 Federal Convention. He died in 1901.
