Birgit Neiser, born in Germany, worked as a freelance photographer for European magazines and in New York before moving to Australia in 2003. She began to photograph the Sydney Fish Markets in 2006, and exhibited photographs in CAUGHT: Photographs of Life at Sydney Fish Market, Mosman Gallery, 2009.

Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd is the largest working fish market in the southern hemisphere, incorporating a working fishing port, large wholesale market, fresh food retail market and dining venue. In 1966, SFM moved from the Haymarket area to its current location at Blackwattle Bay, Pyrmont.
