  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles Drinkwater (1818-1902) was known as a photographer who worked in Sydney and around New South Wales. In 1867 he was listed as working in Kempsey, NSW. He moved to Sydney the following year and established C. Drinkwater’s Chromo Gallery at 621 George Street. He then travelled around taking photographs in country towns including Wallabadah, Tamworth, and Newcastle. He exhibited photographs at the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, and the 1887 Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition.

Fort Macquarie was a castellated battlement fort built between 1817-1821 at Bennelong Point, Sydney, under the direction of architect Francis Greenway. It was demolished in 1901 to make way for new electric tramway sheds named Fort Macquarie Tram Depot. This historical site is where the Sydney Opera House now stands.

From Sydney collection of John Houstone
  • Scope and Content
Oil painting on canvas, 1867, depicting a view from Fort Macquarie across Sydney Cove to Dawes Point and the Rocks area, with the western reach of Sydney harbour in the distance beyond. Fort Macquarie, on the end of Bennelong Point, was built by Francis Greenway under the direction of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, and is now the site of the Sydney Opera House. The current site of the Sydney Harbour Bridge can also be seen in distance on right. This painting records the harbour foreshore as it was in 1867, and provides a contrast to the shoreline today.
