The Burwood and Rothbury estates were among many land holdings in the Hunter district acquired by Dr James Mitchell in the 1820s and 1930s. On his death in 1869, the properties were shared amongst his three children, with his daughter Augusta Maria (wife of Edward Christopher Merewether) inheriting part of the Burwood estate in Newcastle. Mitchell’s son David Scott inherited property in the Rothbury and Hexham areas, which he bequeathed to his sister Augusta on his death in 1907.
The Merewether Estate, originally part of the Burwood estate, was formed in 1893 on the death of Edward Christopher Merewether, who also gave his name to the Newcastle beachside suburb of Merewether.
