George Frederick Halsted was an artist who painted Sydney and other scenes in oil and watercolour during the 1850s to 1880s. He exhibited with the NSW Academy of Arts, the Agricultural Society of NSW and the Art Society of NSW.

The Italianate villa Bomera was designed by surveyor and architect John Frederick Hilly and built in 1856 for colonial merchant William McQuade. In 1878 an upper veranda with cast iron supports was added to the northern side and a ballroom was added to the southern side. Following McQuade's death in 1885 the Bomera estate was divided among the family and his son built Tarana, another villa, to the immediate north of Bomera. After acquisition by the state government in 1910, the house was used as a boarding house and during World War II as naval headquarters, and is now in private ownership.

Clopee was built in 1855 and has since been demolished.
