  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The NSW Naval Brigade was formed under the Volunteer Force Regulation Act of 1865. It was one of the earliest military contingents from the Australian colonies to serve in conflicts overseas. In 1900 naval brigades from NSW, Victoria and South Australia formed part of a multi-national military force sent to China to help put down the Boxer Rebellion.

    A stereograph photograph of the Great Inaugural Procession for the Commonwealth of Australia in Bridge Street as it turns into Pitt Street, Sydney on 1 January, 1901. The Wheat Arch can be seen in the background along Bridge Street. Marching is the NSW Naval Brigade watched on by large crowds lining the street.
