  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The inaugural convention of the Federal Council of Master Ladies’ Hairdressers was staged at the Sydney Town Hall from 18 to 22 August, 1947. In the weeks leading up to, and following, the convention – which attracted thousands of hairdressers from all around the country plus 5,000 visitors – news stories were published nationally highlighting the emerging trend for ‘fantasy’ hairstyles.

    Typewritten caption pasted to verso of photograph reads: 'Shirley English wears a two tone make-up in the Fantasy Division of the Australian Hairdressers Convention held in Sydney recently. One side of her face is bronzed. The hair is tinted gold and, above the bronzed side of the face, the hair is dressed in the Grecian style. The other side is dressed in the Louis the XVI style’.
