  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The stereocard photographs, ca. 1922, depict women and motor cars in the Blue Mountains Region of Sydney. The images capture the developing use of cars for travelling in regional areas for leisure. The first stereocard depicts a touring party parked on a gravel road shrouded in bushfire smoke. The second stereocard shows women posing in front of a motorcar and a grand Federation house called ‘Carmena’. The photographs represents the growing affordability of the car, its use for recreation and as a status symbol for Australian families and urban women in the early 20th century.
