  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Mrs Way's Women’s Millinery and Underclothing shop was established in 1864 in
George Street, Sydney, by Emily Way (d. 1898) and her husband Ebenezer Way (d. 1907). The business thrived but in 1865 Emily gave birth to a son who died five months later, and in September 1867 Mrs Way’s new Pitt Street premises were destroyed by fire. By 1870 the business, still in Pitt Street, was listed in her husband Ebenezer’s name, and after his death in 1907, his estate was valued at £133,000. By this time the Ways had returned to England leaving the business in the hands of their sons; the firm was still operating in Pitt Street in the 1950s. The multi-storey building was extensively remodelled in 1907.
