  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Frederick Rose (1915-1991) was born in Croydon, London. studied geology and anthropology at Cambridge University, and had a particular interest in Australian Aboriginal people. He worked and conducted ethnographical research in northern and central Australia before emigrating with his wife and children to the German Demographic Republic in 1956, where he worked as a professor of social anthropology. He supervised Hannah Middleton’s research, and the two had an ongoing professional and romantic relationship. Both were members of the Communist Party and were prominent supporters of Aboriginal rights.

    Hannah Middleton was born in Preston, England, in 1942, and graduated in African Studies from the University of London. In 1965 she moved to East Berlin, lecturing in English language and institutions and later studying at Humboldt University, where she was awarded her doctorate. In 1970-1971 she carried out fieldwork in Australia, living with the Gurindji people of the Northern Territory, and in 1974 she moved to Australia.

    The papers were part of personal and family correspondence kept by Frederick Rose at the home in Germany of his daughter Ruth Struwe
  • Scope and Content
    Correspondence between Frederick Rose and Hannah Middleton, documenting their professional and romantic relationship between 1966 and 1979. Writing during the Cold War, between London, Sydney and East Berlin, Rose and Middleton discuss their tumultuous personal relationship, their work, and social and political events. The papers include manuscript and typescript letters, notes, telegrams and greeting cards, arranged chronologically in three bundles.
