Corporal S. J. D. Stutley, a Methodist minister, enlisted aged 23 in Adelaide, South Australia, on September 1915 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. He served as a gunner in Egypt, 7-25 March 1916 and in France and Belgium, 23 March-9 September 1916, with the 17th Battery, Australian Field Artillery. He was invalided back to Australia on the Nestor, arriving 21 September 1917.
