    Almerino Albertin was a high-ranking Italian officer ('Capitano Maggiore') from Abano Terme, Padova, Italy. He was captured in Greece on 1 March 1941 and was brought to Australia for internment. Albertin arrived in Sydney on the Queen Mary on 13 October 1941 and was interned at Cowra Prisoner of War Camp (Camp No. 12), where he was assigned no. 47841.

  • Scope and Content
    This collection comprises seven lettergrams written by Capitano Maggiore (‘Captain Major’) Almerino Albertin during his internment at Cowra Prisoner of War Camp, New South Wales, 1942-1946. The lettergrams are written in Italian and addressed to Albertin’s wife and other family members in Padua, Italy. Also included is a Christmas message from Albertin to his family, written on the letterhead of the Apostolic Delegation in Australia (1942). All of Albertin’s correspondence contains a ‘Passed by Censor’ stamp and/or an ‘Approved for transmission by camp commandant’ stamp; the lettergram dated 22 May 1944 includes content redacted in black.

    There is also a typescript letter from the International Committee of the Red Cross (‘Comité International de la Croix-Rouge. Agence centrale des prisonniers de guerre’) addressed to Albertin’s father, regarding a photograph taken of Albertin at Cowra (photograph not included in this collection), 1944.
