  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Samuel Cousins R.A. (1801-1887) was an English mezzotint engraver. He was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1885 and is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of British engraving. Several of these portraits were collected by Cousins. See drawing no. 14.

  • Scope and Content
    A collection of 37 prints relating to James Cook. There are 25 portraits of Cook, eight images of the ‘Death of Cook’ and four images of medals or eulogies with Cook’s portrait. The images include copper, stipple, steel and wood engravings and lithographs, dating from 1777 to 1854.

    1. Capt. James Cook. Published by Fielding & Walker, 1st Feb 1780. Portrait of Cook in a circular frame, with fabric draped around, telescope & globe visible, above a frieze of a representation of Cook's Death.
    2. Capt. James Cook, F.R.S. Published W. Bent, Paternoster Row Oval portrait.
    3. Captn. James Cook, F.R.S. Oval portrait with elaborate sunburst effect surrounding it, almost like a Hawaiian feather coat. Published by J. Fielding Paternoster Row.
    4. The Death of Captain James Cook, F.R.S. at Owhyhee in MDCCLXXIX. Header "Captain Cook's Voyage, Octavo Edition. J. Fielding, Pater-noster Row, Scatcherd & Whitaker Ave Maria Lane, & J. Stockdall Piccadilly.
    5. Jac Cook Oceani Investigator Acerrimus (&) Jac. King LLD FRS. From the European Magazine, London March 1, 1785 by J. Sewell. Two medals showing portrait of Cook and King and the verso.
    6. Crowning the Bust of Captain Cook. A bust of Cook, a cherub blowing a horn, while a maiden crowns the bust, another maiden sits before the statue with paper and pen in hand, a globe, flag, anchor and trident on the ground. There is a poem below the illustration.
    7. James Cook. J.S. Klauber Augusta, sculp. N. Dance, pinxit. 1793. Cook seated in a chair with the map of the Southern Hemisphere open.

    19. The death of Captain Cook. Captain Cook is flat on his face, the Hawaiians, a la Rousseau, dominate the view.
