Leslie Wilkinson was born at New Southgate, Middlesex, England, and migrated to Sydney in 1918 to take up the new chair of architecture at the University of Sydney. Wilkinson was a great admirer of colonial Australian and Mediterranean architecture, and combined both these influences in the style of his designs. He became known for both his ecclesiastical and domestic work, designing several large villas in Sydney and across New South Wales. The main house at Markvale was designed by Wilkinson in 1951 to add to the earlier cottage of 1921.
