  • Collection history
The letter to Marshal William Beresford was part of a larger collection of correspondence that was donated to the National Army Museum in London in 1990. This one item was retained because of its relationship to Phillip Parker King.
  • Scope and Content
A list of supplies, 6 January 1834, ordered for Phillip Parker King’s pastoral property, Essington Park, near Oberon, from Sydney merchants J. B. Bettington by Richard Nichols, overseer. The list includes axes, gunpowder and rum as well as basic foods such as flour, sugar, butter, cheese and rice. The list also includes instructions to send the items at ‘the earliest to the inn at Hartley’.

The list is written on the back of a letter, 1810, from a Portuguese brigadier to Marshal William Beresford, commander of the Portuguese army during the Peninsular War. The letter concerns the need for supplies after the destruction of the town of Badajoz by the French. It is written in Portuguese.
