Roland Shakespeare Wakelin (1887-1971), born on 17 April 1887 at Greytown, New Zealand, was among the few artists who introduced modernism to Sydney. Moving to Australia in 1912, he studied under Antonio Dattilo Rubbo and Norman Carter at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. From 1934, Wakelin's paintings often depicted his harbour city, as well as intimate subjects of domestic life.
