  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Septimus Roe (1797-1878) was apprentice Midshipman aboard HMS Rippon July 1813-August 1814, and was enrolled at Christ's Hospital in London. He was given positions on HMS Rippon and HMS Horatio, and gained an appointment as midshipman under the command of Philip Parker King with orders to complete the survey of the Australian coast. Roe was appointed a midshipman in the navy on 27 May 1813 and sailed in the Rippon which was employed in the blockade of the French coast. His time on the Rippon was marked by heavy involvement in blockades, battles and troop movements during the Napoleonic War.
