    This collection comprises original manuscripts of 30 compositions by Ross Edwards, including sketch material, associated documents and correspondence.

    BOX 1X
    CHAMBER MUSIC
    Ancora estatico : a fragment for string quartet (2008). 80th birthday tribute to Peter Sculthorpe. Performed by the Goldner String Quartet at the 2009 Kangaroo Valley Festival. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil (4 pages), photocopy of manuscript score, manuscript parts in ink.

    Animisms : suite for five instruments (Balmain, 2014). Quintet for flute, clarinet, percussion, violin and cello, commissioned by the Australia Ensemble. Dedicated to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil (35 pages, including partly typeset first movement and some photocopied sections, particularly in fifth movement), bound typeset score with manuscript corrections in pencil, second typeset score with corrections in pencil, printed email correspondence with Sonia Maddock, 2014-2015.

    Bagatelle : for clarinet and violin (Leura, 1991), for Prof. Eric Gross on his retirement from Sydney University Music Department in 1991. Photocopy of manuscript score in ink (original sent to Eric Gross).

    Bagatelle : for recorder quartet (Sydney, 1996), commissioned by Rosemary Kendall “for the recorder players of Quaama”. Photocopy of manuscript score in ink (2 pages).

    Barossa pearl : quintet for flute, clarinet, marimba, violin and cello (Sydney, 2000), composed to welcome Sir Peter Maxwell Davies to his residency at the Barossa Festival in 2000. Later revised, extended and incorporated into Animisms (2014). Original manuscript score in ink (3 pages).

    Bird morning : for two pianos and didjeridu (Balmain, 2015), commissioned by the Brown and Breen Duo. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil (14 pages) and selected printed email correspondence with Bonnie Brown, Ron Brown, Graham Williams, 2014-2016.

    Duet for treble recorders (Sydney, 1986), commissioned by British recorder player John Turner especially for a BBC broadcast. Manuscript score in ink (2 pages).

    Enyato IV: for bass clarinet and percussion (Sydney, 1995, revised 2012), commissioned by Eva Griffith for the Duo Contemporain in memory of Heinz Harant. Original manuscript score in ink (9 pages), typeset score for last movement (Ulpirra) with manuscript corrections, typeset revised score.

    Gallipoli : for string quartet (2014), commissioned by the Ian Potter Foundation’s Cultural Trust to commemorate the 100th anniversary of ANZAC. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil (10 pages), typeset score with manuscript corrections, typeset score marked up for orchestral version (Gallipoli Symphony), program from world premiere performance by the Australian String Quartet, and related printed email correspondence with Claire Rimmer, Richard Divall, Angelina Zucco, Chris Latham, 2013-2015.

    A postcard from Sydney : for violin and piano, “for Malcolm Williamson on his 70th Birthday”. Manuscript score in ink (1 page) with manuscript revision in pencil and ink for cello.

    String quartet no. 3 : Summer dances (Balmain and Leura, 2012), commissioned by Kim Williams AM for Musica Viva Australia in honour of the late Kenneth W Tribe AC. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil (45 pages), correspondence with Kim Williams 2014, interview for The West Australian newspaper, speeches, reviews and other documents.

    Veni creator spiritus : for string octet (Sydney, 1993, revised 1998), commissioned by Musica Viva for the Academy of St Martin in the Fields Octet. Dedicated to Helen Edwards. Manuscript score in ink (29 pages) and some selected printed email correspondence with Elaine Mitchener, Damien Beaumont, Sophie Emery, Bernard Rofe, Judith Foster, Megan Stapleton, Alan Benson, 2008-2012.

    Dawn canticle : for children’s choir (2000), an arrangement of Dawn Mantras (1999) commissioned by the Braden family of Sydney. Dedicated to Lyn Williams and the Sydney Children’s Choir. Original manuscript score in ink (4 pages), and printed email correspondence with Lyn Williams, March 2010.

    Eternity : for large SATB chorus, brass, organ and percussion (1973), originally titled Antifon. Winner of the John Bishop Memorial Award, University of Adelaide, 1974. Manuscript vocal score in pencil (1 folded sheet), 2 photocopies of manuscript vocal score, manuscript score in pencil (11 pages), program note describing the history of the work, photocopy of published interview with Ross Edwards by Jonathan Mills ‘The voice and the kingdom’, printed email correspondence with Roland Peelman, Peggy Polias, Chris Latham and William Kempster, 2010-2013.

    Miracles : for children’s and men’s choirs (Balmain, 2014), commissioned by the Braden family of Sydney for Lyn Williams and Gondwana Choirs. Sketch material, manuscript score (4 pages, dated 2011), photocopy of manuscript score, source material for the texts, small poster for premiere performance, photocopy of Limelight Magazine article, and printed email correspondence with Lyn Williams, 2014.

    Unity – diversity : school song (ca. 1987-1990), commissioned by the Principal, Rita Fin, for International Grammar School, Sydney, which Ross Edwards' children attended in the early 1990s. Manuscript score in ink ( 6 pages) arranged for Michael Atherton and the Southern Crossings Ensemble.

    Yabun [‘Sing!’] : school song (1990s), commissioned by the music mistress, Ms Chris Belshaw, for St. Andrew’s Cathedral School, Sydney. Draft score in pencil, manuscript score in ink (2 pages) and related printed fax and email correspondence with Elizabeth Briggs, March 2001.

    INCIDENTAL MUSIC
    Incidental music (1984) for a production of Ibsen’s ‘The Pillars of Society’ by The Sydney Theatre Company, Sydney Opera House Drama Theatre. Manuscript score in ink (23 pages), clarinet part (photocopy of score, with cue annotations), piano part (photocopy of score) and percussion part.

    ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
    An ominous calm (2015). First movement of the collective ballet ‘Cyclone Tracy’ (other movements contributed by Iaian Grandage, Lachlan Skipworth and Kat McGuffie), commissioned by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor Matthew Wood, and choreographed by Gary Lang. Manuscript score in pencil (25 pages), showing reworking and expansion of an earlier orchestral piece, Emerald Crossing, together with photocopy of program and related printed email correspondence with Matthew Wood, 2015.

    Chorale and Ecstatic dance : for string orchestra (Sydney, 1995), formerly titled Enyato III, commissioned by Eva Griffith in memory of Heinz Harant. Original manuscript score in ink (41 pages) of orchestral version for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra European tour, 1995.

    Frog and star cycle : double concerto for alto saxophone, percussion and orchestra (Balmain, 2015), commissioned by Andrew and Renata Kaldor for Amy Dickson, Colin Currie and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.     Piano concerto (Pearl Beach, 1982, revised 2003). Sketch material, original manuscript score in pencil and ink (122 pages), with revisions and extensions added 2003.

    Zodiac : ballet (2014), commissioned by the Houston Ballet. Sketch material, manuscript and typeset score, with corrections demonstrating how the piece was largely constructed from juxtaposed extracts from Edwards’ previous orchestral works (with the help of editor Bernard Rofe). With related notes, publicity and cards of appreciation.

    Kangaroo Valley blues : for piano (2005), composed for Martin and Peter Wesley-Smith on their 60th birthday. Draft score in pencil and manuscript score in ink.

    Sea star fantasy : for piano (2015), commissioned by John Porter and dedicated by him to Ann Wesley-Smith. Composed for pianist Bernadette Harvey. Inspired by the plainsong ‘Ave Maris Stella’. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil (11 pages), final revisions to typeset score, and printed email correspondence with Bernadette Harvey, Bernard Rofe, 2013-2016.

    SOLO INSTRUMENT MUSIC
    Mystic spring : songs and dances for a treble woodwind (2006). For solo flute, oboe, clarinet or alto saxophone. Manuscript score in ink (17 pages, pages 15-17 typeset), corrected typeset proofs for solo oboe by Reed Music (2011) and related correspondence with Sam Seabrook, 2012.

    Prelude & Laughing rock : for solo cello (1993-2003), commissioned by Belinda Webster and dedicated to David Pereira. Original manuscript score (4 pages) incorporating suggested edits by cellists Trish O’Brien and Imogen Malnins, and an extension to Laughing Rock made in 1999, printed email to Trish O’Brien, 2007.

    Water spirit song (2003) for solo cor anglais, cello or bassoon. Part for cor anglais published by Ricordi (2003), part for cello published by Ricordi (2003) with manuscript corrections in pencil, part for bassoon published by Reed Music (2011) with manuscript corrections in red ink.

    VOCAL MUSIC (FOR SOLO VOICE)
    Five senses : five poems of Judith Wright, for female voice and piano (Sydney & Leura, 2012, revised 2013), commissioned by Matthew Sandblom in memory of his father, Eric Sandblom. Sketch material, manuscript score in pencil and ink (34 pages, partly water damaged), corrections to typeset score (2011), bound photocopy of score, revised manuscript score to 5th song Five Senses (2013, 4 pages), and selected correspondence with Jenny Duck-Chong, 2008-2016, Simone Riksman, 2012, and Greta Bradman, 2011-2013.

    Maninya I : for voice and cello (Pearl Beach & Sydney, 1981-1985), dedicated to Hartley Newnham. Original manuscript score in ink (14 pages). This work became the basis of the first movement of the violin concerto Maninyas (1988).
