Sir Joseph Banks and his only sibling, Sarah Sophia, remained close throughout their lives. Sarah, never having married, lived with Banks and his wife, Lady Dorothea, until her death in 1818.

The documents in this series were previously located at ML A 80-2. They were purchased in 1884 from Lord Brabourne by Sir SaulSamuel, the Agent-General for New South Wales and were transferredto the Mitchell Library in 1910. They were part of the accessionwhich became known as the Brabourne collection.
