  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Pendleton's Lithography (1825-1836) was a lithographic print studio in 19th century Boston, Massachusetts, established by brothers William S. Pendleton (1795-1879) and John B. Pendleton (1798-1866). In 1825, John Pendleton purchased a lithographic press in Boston but lacked the experience to deploy the machinery until his brother returned from Europe with practical printing expertise. Several staff and apprentices, including Nathaniel Currier, acquired the skills to establish their own lithographic studios.

The descriptive letterpress below the image bears the imprint of Monroe and Francis, printing, publishing and bookselling firm in Boston, Massachusetts, established by Edmund Munroe (1775-1854) and David Francis (1779-1853). Active at Boston from 1802 until Jan. 1808, from Jan. 1810 until Oct. 1814, for an undetermined portion of 1815 and possibly into early 1816, and finally from May 1816 through 1854; during the interim periods the firm took on an additional partner, Samuel Hale Parker (1781-1864), and was known as Munroe, Francis & Parker.
