  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Born in Sydney in 1948, Jeff Rigby studied at the National Art School and has a diploma of Education from Sydney Teachers College. His first exhibition was at Sydney’s Bonython Gallery in 1976. He also exhibited at Macquarie Galleries in 1976 and established a long relationship with Macquarie Galleries until it closed in 1993. Rigby’s drawings are primarily of urban landscapes, abandoned or disused buildings and places and industrial architecture, working in the mediums of gouache, acrylic, coloured pencil and charcoal. This series documents the industrial landscapes of Lithgow, Newcastle BHP and Broken Hill, were produced between 1997 and 2006, a significant era of decline in NSW heavy industry. They were displayed as part of an exhibition of trade union banners in Broken Hill in 2006, the joint exhibition was titled ‘Places of Industry; When Workers Unite.’
  • Scope and Content
    25 drawings and paintings by Jeff Rigby of industrial landscapes of the now disused Lithgow blast furnace and locomotive depot, BHP steelworks Newcastle, and disused mines at Broken Hill including North and South Mine, Perilya, Brown’s shaft, Delprat’s Mine and Pasminco.
    The pictures are executed in a mix of charcoal, charcoal/wash, gouache, and acrylic in a realist style and document the last days of a number of significant New South Wales industrial sites. 17 of the works are charcoal and charcoal wash on stonehenge paper, 5 are gouache on stretched fabriano paper, and 3 are acrylic on canvas. All paintings are signed by the artist and were completed by Jeff Rigby between 1997 and 2006.
