    The 14th Dalai Lama (born 1935), began visiting Australia in 1982. He is a Buddhist monk who is considered the spiritual leader of Tibet. He moved into exile in 1959, after the annexation of Tibet by China which began in 1950. The 14th Dalia Lama has become one of the worlds most recognisable religious leaders in the 20th century, having visited many countries around the globe, teaching Buddist principles and advocating for the liberation of Tibet and for peace. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

  • Scope and Content
    Three scrapbook albums of mixed material related to five visits of the 14th Dalai Lama to Sydney in 1992, 1996, 2002, 2007 and 2009. The material includes photographs, newspaper and journal cuttings, brochures, printed ephemera, invitations and publicity material. The material was assembled and annotated by Joan Griffin who was an active member of the Tibetan friendship society during these visits.
