  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Livingston Mitchell (a.k.a. Livingston(e) Mitchell and, or Thomas Livingston(e) Mitchell, The Younger) was the eldest son of the well-known explorer, Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (1792-1855) and his wife, Mary Thomson Blunt (1801-1884), the daughter of British army General Richard Blunt. The Mitchell's had three children were born: Georgina (1819-1904); Thomas Livingston Mitchell (1821-1889) and Roderick Mitchell (1822-1851).

Sir Thomas Mitchell served as a volunteer in the Iberian Peninsular War, where he trained as a surveyor. By the end of this extended military campaign, he was regarded as one of the British Army's best draftsmen which resulted in his being tasked, in 1814, with the honour of preparing the official maps and battlefield plans to document the Peninsular campaign.

In 1826 he was promoted to major, and through his army connections, secured the position of Assistant Surveyor-General in NSW, slated to succeed John Oxley. Appointed Surveyor-General of New South Wales in 1828, Mitchell made four exploring expeditions into the interior of Australia between 1831 and 1846, and published several accounts of his explorations. He was knighted in 1839 and died at his home in Sydney in 1855

Livingston Mitchell (known as Livy) grew up in Sydney, receiving his commission into the Army in 1838, after which he was stationed in India. Returning to Sydney with his regiment in 1840, Livy rose to the rank of lieutenant before retiring to manage his father’s property, Parkhall, near Appin. Marrying Catherine McAlistair in 1848, their son Roderick was born at Appin in 1852. The couple were recorded on the 1881 census for Jersey, in the UK Channel Islands, where Livingston died in 1889. His will, presented for probate in Brisbane, QLD., stated that his collection of family portraits should go to his youngest brother Richard Blunt Mitchell (1838–1916).
