    John Lawrence Tierney (1892-1972) was an author and NSW school teacher who published four collections of short stories and two novels. Tierney also published many short stories for The Bulletin under the pseudonym of Brian James, where he met Douglas Stewart and Norman Lindsay, who became close friends.

    Mary McPherson worked as a History Information Officer at the NSW Department of Education from 1991-2002. She has written the history of several NSW public schools, where, and during this time, she became interested in the life of educator and writer John Lawrence Tierney.
