Ivan Victor Young enlisted aged 23, as a reinforcement in the AIF, in Sydney on November 11, 1916. He was a Private (no. 2486) in the 1st Pioneer Battalion. He enlisted together with his older brother, Walter Gilmour, Private (no. 2487). Ivan spent 1917 training in Sutton Veny in England and saw action in France at the start of 1918. He returned to Australia in 1919.

Small notebook containing manuscript verse and notes written by Private Ivan Victor Young during his war service with the 1st Pioneer Battalion AIF, 1916-1919. An original poem entitled ‘A Reinforcement’s Plea’ addresses the women of Australia who shamed those men who didn’t enlist for service immediately, then complained about the men’s lack of faithfulness when they eventually did go overseas and entered into romantic relationships with English women. The notebook includes a photographic postcard of an Australian soldier created in Barker Studios, London, addressed to I. Young, Lidcome Sydney.

The enscription on the photograph is, '3487 Pte W.G. Young 1st Pioneers A.I.F.' Military records reveal this is Private Walter Gilmour Young, an older brother of Ivan.
