  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The group are likely members of the Maliangapa tribe, who had a camp near the creek on the Yancannia station. Some of the tribe worked as shepherds, labourers and household workers on the station. Maliangapa territory had once extended between the Barrier and Grey Ranges along New South Wales’ western border.

The Shaw family, to whom the postcard is addressed, sometimes spent their summers at the station, which is located in far north-western New South Wales. Mary Turner Shaw, a descendant of the Shaw family, wrote about the station in her 1987 book Yancannia Creek. Other material relating to the Shaw family can be found at the State Library of Victoria.

  • Scope and Content
1 photographic postcard by an unidentified photographer depicting some Indigenous Australians at Yancannia station dressed in European clothes. This postcard is addressed to Freyda Shaw, the daughter of Yancannia Station’s owner Oliphant Shaw. The three women and the young girl are probably mmbers of the dwindling Maliangapa tribe, who had a camp on the property near the creek. Maliangapa territory had once extended between the Barrier and Grey Rangers, along the western border of NSW.
