The annual Hospital Saturday Fund began in London in 1873, and was shortly followed in Sydney in 1889. Saturday was the elected day as, at the time in England, wages were paid on Saturday. Hospital Saturday Fund came as a response to a growing need for co-ordination of health services, and poor health caused by poverty and lack of nutrition throughout England. Following the introduction in Sydney, the event spread throughout New South Wales and Queensland. Middle class women who were not in the workforce could derive a sense of personal achievement from undertaking charitable work. The organisation still operates today in both the UK and Ireland.
