  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Stanley Llewellyn Perry (1890-1979), was a soldier and chemical engineer from Sydney. He joined the Australian Imperial Force in 1914 and was a lieutenant in the 13th Battalion, where he was involved in defending Quinn’s Post in Gallipoli. He was promoted several times during World War I, and in October 1917 was appointed commanding officer and temporary lieutenant-colonel of the 45th Battalion. His younger brother Theophilus William Perry, a lieutenant in the same Battalion, was killed in action during a counter attack on 5 April 1918 in Dernancourt, France.

Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean (1879-1968) was a historian and journalist from Bathurst, NSW. He was selected to be Australia’s first official war correspondent and spent time with Australian troops in Gallipoli from April to December 1915, and in France from 1916-1918. The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918 was a 12-volume series covering Australia’s involvement in WWI. Bean edited the series and wrote six of the volumes, it was published by Angus and Robertson between 1920 and 1942.

Quinn’s Post was the most advanced Anzac post, located on the northern edge of the main Anzac line in Gallipoli, it was one of the keys to the Monash and Shrapnel valleys. If it had fallen the Turks could have broken into the heart of the Anzac position. In April and May 1915 Perry’s battalion suffered heavy casualties defending Quinn’s Post and holding their position, as well as contributing to casualties on the Turkish side.
