Judy Cassab (1920-2015) was one of Australia's best known portrait painters and the winner of many prestigious art awards including the coveted Archibald Prize (1960 and 1968), the Australian Women’s Weekly women’s prize (1955 and 1956) and the Helena Rubinstein Prize (1964 and 1965). In 1969 Judy was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her service to the visual arts.

The sitter, Margaret (Moir Southwell) Woodward (1938-) is a Sydney artist who won a scholarship to the National Art School from 1957-1960 and studied under John Passmore and Godfrey Miller. She graduated with the highest honours, receiving the Nancy Kilgour Memorial Prize. As a landscape artist she has won several prizes including the Le Gay Brereton Prize for Drawing, the Wynne Prize (1971) for landscape painting and is a twice winner of the Portia Geach Memorial Prize.

  • Scope and Content
This portrait is an oil on paper which shows the artist Margaret Woodward seated at a table drawing in a book with artists’ tools sitting on the surface of the table. It appears to be one of several preparatory sketches of Margaret Woodward. Weekly portrait painting sessions were held with Margaret Woodward and Nora Heysen, mentioned in her 1993 diary. It is possible that the portrait Margaret Woodward drawing in a book, 1994 was part of these sessions.
