    The 54th Troop Carrier Wing operated in the South West Pacific theatre of war during World War II as part of the U.S. Army Air Forces Fifth Air Force. The Wing’s public relations officer, Captain Richard S. Jacobson, was editor of the book ‘Moresby to Manila via troop carrier: true story of 54th Troop Carrier Wing, the third tactical arm of the U.S. Army Air Forces in the southwest Pacific’, which was published by Angus & Robertson in 1945.

    Approximately 750 black & white photographic prints for publication, in various numbered sequences, and approximately 350 further unsorted black & white photographs. The photographs were taken during World War II in New Guinea (locations include Biak, Cape Gloucester, Finschhafen, Goroka, Hollandia, Humboldt Bay, Kerowagi, Lae, Lake Sentani, Mount Hagan, Nadzab, Noemfoor, Owi, Port Moresby, Saidor, Salamaua, Tadji, Wakde, Wewak), the Philippines area (locations include Angaur, Leyte), Sydney and regional New South Wales. Subjects include U.S. commanding officers and personnel from various troop carrier units, Australian service personnel, local inhabitants, Japanese casualties, aircraft, aerial and ground views of war zones, and tourist destinations within New South Wales. Many of the photographs bear [Australian] Department of Information or U.S. Office of War Information stamps. 4 negatives are located at ON 595/21-24
