- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Rose Chown (d. 2010) was a fighter for Native Title and Aboriginal social justice. She was the founder of the of the Wiradjuri Wellington Town Common Group - the first traditional owners in mainland Australia to make a claim under the Native Title Act. The claim was lodged in 1994 but was tied up in court battles and negotiations until 2007, when the NSW government compulsorily acquired the land under its Aboriginal Land Rights Act and transferred it to Aboriginal ownership. - Scope and ContentPapers include correspondence, notes, maps, feasibility study, reports, news cuttings and agreements related to Rose Chown's struggle to claim native title to her ancestral home near Macquarie River, Wellington. In 1999, the Liberal Environment Minister Tim Moore was appointed mediator of this case, that led to the Wellington Common Indigenous Land Use Agreement - Area Agreement in 2000.
