- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
John Clements Wickham (1798-1864) was commander of the third voyage of HMS Beagle (1837-1841) which aimed to chart the coastline of Australia from the Bass Strait up the north-west coast to the Gulf of Carpentaria. As there was no official artist aboard the Beagle on this voyage, Wickham’s drawings helped keep a visual record of the journey. Wickham retired from the navy in 1841 and in 1842 he married Anna Macarthur, daughter of Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur. - Scope and ContentSmall watercolour showing rear view of HMS Beagle sailing through Bass Strait with Black Pyramid on the starboard side.
