    Charles William Erskine Smith was born in South Grafton, New South Wales on February 11, 1897. In August 1915 at the age of 18 he enlisted at Victoria Barracks, Sydney. He was placed in the 13th Battalion, Australian Expeditionary Force. He trained in Egypt but did not fight at Gallipoli. He was eventually sent to France where in August 1916 he was wounded and evacuated to England and then returned to Sydney where he was discharged due to medical unfitness.

    Letter, dated March 10, 1916, 13th Rein, 13th Batt, 4th Brigade, Zeitoun, Egypt. Addressed to 'Dear Mum'. Letterhead of the Young Men's Christian Association with H.M. Force in Egypt. Only 1 page of letter.

    Letter, dated July 28, 1916, Somewhere in France. Addressed to 'Dear Mother', from 'Your loving son Erk'.

    Letter, dated December 29, 1916, A5 ward, 3rd Aus Aux Hosp, Dartford, London. Addressed to 'Dear Mother', from 'Your loving son Erk'.

    2 photographic postcards of possibly an Anzac Day March. The images are taken in Orient Street, Bateman's Bay, ca 1935. Images show the Annetts Grocery Store and the Batemans Bay Talkies Theatre.
