The vast majority of the shells depicted in the album come from the Indian or Pacific Oceans. Illustrations of note include Conus marmoreus (west Pacific) Conus litteratus (Indo Pacific), Conus quercinus (Indian Ocean), Conus textile (Indo-Pacific, Australia), Conus spurius (Gulf of Mexico), Conus imperialis (Indo-Pacific) and Conus Leopardus (Indo-Pacific). - Scope and ContentAn album containing 71 leaves with a total of 114 watercolour drawings of exotic shells (23 of cowries on 9 leaves, 91 of cone shells on 62 leaves). Drawn on paper watermarked "J. Whatman Turkey Mills” 1817 or 1818 (endpapers 1825). The album is bound in original brown straight-grained morocco gilt and has been professionally re-backed with the original spine. It has red silk endpapers and the spine label reads “Conus et Cypraea ex Museo, G.C.B.”, circa 1817-1825.
