  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The prefix "H.C.S." ("Honorable Company's Ship") was used for East Indiaman as a general name for any sailing ship operating under charter or licence to any of the East India Companies of the major European trading powers of the 17th through the 19th centuries.
The Marchioness of Ely, launched in February 1812, was built for Sir Robert Wigram. The ship is reported to have made nine voyages to India and China, ending up under the command of Captain Charles Edward Mangles before being broken up in 1829.

It is suggested that the artist may be one Anthony Pierce Allen, a naval officer, whose illustrated journals have been available in the past. These journals include a similar painting of life on board the Marchioness of Ely.
