  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Gittoes (1949-) is a major Australian artist and filmaker. He was a member of The Yellow House in Potts Point, an artists collective founded by Martin Sharp whose members also included Brett Whiteley, Albie Thoms, Peter Weir and Antoinette Starkiewicz. The Yellow House operated from 1970 to 1973 and is now considered a milestone in Australian contemporary art.
Gittoes won international recognition through his artistic expeditions into conflict zones, including Rwanda during the 1995 genocide, and was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize in 2015 for exposing injustice for more than 45 years as a humanist artist, activist and filmaker, for his courage to witness and confront violence in war zones of the world, for enlisting the arts to subdue aggression and for enlivening the creative spirit to promote tolerance, respect and peace with justice.
