  • Scope and Content
The title of this print translates to ‘The birds of Europe’. It was producecd in 1856 as an advertisement for the sale of exotic birds by keeper Troiyaku Kumakichi. The parrots illustrated are unlikely to have come from Europe. Rather, this print reflects the interest in Europe many Japanese people had at this time, and the commerical decisions based on this interest. The bird represented in the top central area is a King Parrot. The crested white parrots may be Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos. Uncrested parrots are represented by the Little Corella, in the centre of the image.
