  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    This land grant was made to Captain Henry Steel by Sir Richard Bourke in fulfilment of a promise made to Steel by Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1823 for services during the Napoleonic Wars. It was the first grant of land in the Mudgee district and is known as ‘Steel’s Grant’. It was sold to Henry Cox in 1836.

    Grant of 2000 acres at Mudgee. Signed and sealed by Sir Richard Bourke on 9 April 1835; with related legal documents 1836-1875.

    1. Land grant of 2000 acres given to Henry Steel. Printed text with hand-written sections completed specifying the the fine details of the grant. Front of grant has the key information, including the location of the grant, who the grant is for, the date, and the size of the grant. (9 April 1835)

    2. Documents from the Internal Revenue Office, detailing the land tax owed by Henry Steel at a rate of two pounds. Some documents are printed with the specific details hand-written onto the documents, whilst others are complete manuscripts detailing the history of ownership and the reasons that ownership changed.

    3. Documents relating to the transfer of land from Allen Gamack, George Cox, and Edward Cox to Henry Cox Esq, 15 March 1838. Details the terms and conditions of the loan, including the period of time, price and geographic size.

    4. Documents relating to Henry Cox's mortgage, 26 March 1852, including both a handwritten and a printed copy of the terms of the mortgage. A summary of the key information including the date of the indenture, repayment amounts and involved parties is on the front page.

    5. Indenture relating to the sale of land from Henry Cox to Vivian Cox, 4th October 1859. Document details the terms and conditions of the land sale, including the parties involved and the price. The key information is presented on the front of the document.

    6. Indenture relating to the sale of land from Vivian Cox to George Henry Cox, 2nd April 1863. Documents details the terms and conditions of the sale, including the date and price.

    7. Mortgage of the Honourable G.H. Cox. M & C. to The Australian Mutual Provident Society, 15th September 1868.

    8. Reconveyance between The Australian Mutual Provident Society and the Honourable G. H. Cox, 5th October, 1875
